Friday Memes

Making another appearance in the Friday Memes (I'm still trying to figure out where all my blogging time when this year....)...

Book Beginnings on Friday is a bookish meme now sponsored by Rose City Reader (who originally inspired the meme). Here's what you do: Share the first line (or two) of the book you are currently reading on your blog or in the comments section. Include the title and author so we know what you're reading. Then, if you are so moved, let us know what your first impressions were based on that first line and if you did or did not like that sentence. Link up each week at Gilion's place.

Here are the first few lines from Death by Sheer Torture by Robert Barnard:

I first heard of the death of my father when I saw his obituary in The Times. I skimmed through it, cast my eye over the Court Circular, and was about to turn to the leader page when I was struck by something odd in the obituary and went back to it

The Friday 56 is a bookish meme sponsored by Freda's Voice. It is really easy to participate. Just grab a book, any book, and turn to page 56. Find a sentence that grabs you and post it.

Here is the mine from Death by Sheer Torture by Robert Barnard:

And if anyone by some laughable contingency had offered Chris a glamorous and exciting job, she would have cast a pall of the humdrum over it within hours of signing on.

I love the beginning. It pretty much sums up the relationship between the narrator and his father in one sentence. Thanks for sharing!

Great beginning! I wonder why he and his father were estranged? Also, I've known people like Chris in your Friday 56 selection. They seem to suck all the energy out of the room! This sounds like a book I'd enjoy reading.
My Friday post features THE 13 OF HEARTS.
