Challenge Complete: Outdo Yourself

January 1, 2014 – December 31, 2014
Last December I signed up for Book Vixen's Outdo Yourself Challenge and with the number of books read in 2013 I was locked in to read at least 191 books in 2014. I have just made that goal by the skin of my teeth. Last book finished today and reviewed tonight. Sadly--given my struggle to meet the 191 goal this year--I don't see how I can possibly outdo myself in 2015. So, I'm going to sit out for a year, take it a bit easier, and hope to have a number by this time next year that will allow me to set an "Outdo" goal once again.  Happy New Year, everyone!

Final Wrap Up: 100+ Book Challenge

I actually met my challenge goal back on July 9, 2014 (click for that post). But with the year only half-way gone, I naturally kept reading. My final total was 191 books read for the year (just finished the last one tonight). Since I was logging books for an "outdo yourself" challenge, I finally gave up logging books at both places and my final list of all books can be found HERE. I will definitely be back for more in 2015! Thanks, Freda, for hosting the challenge for us!

Tzimmes: Review

Last Review of the Year! And the final book needed for my Outdo Yourself Challenge--which means I have officially met the 2014 requirements of all 47 challenges I signed up for. Yes, 47. Full year end details and wrap-up blog post coming...but now on with the review.

Tzimmes (and don't forget the cheesecake and strudel) is a charming slice of Jewish life served up with a side of humor and heaping portion of panache by Art Marshall Fell. When Art contacted me through the blog to ask me if I'd like to review his short novel, I was delighted. His request was lovely--it came adorned with two music videos of him and his friend David Cross playing a bit of jazz and his bio told me that he hails from Bloomington. As I told Art in my reply, How could I possibly say no to a fellow Bloomingtonian? I couldn't and I am glad.

This short piece of fiction was delightful to read as it tells the story of Dr. Sam Landover, high school math teacher, and his trials and tribulations in brokering a deal among the Shalom Center's Board as they try to choose a new rabbi. Dr. Landover has just gotten through congratulating himself on easing himself off of the Board and getting his friend Max voted on. Time to relax! But Max finds himself unable to take sides when the other six Board members split down the middle on a vote between two rabbinical candidates. He has friends and customers on each side and he doesn't want to make anyone mad. So...he insists that Sam (who got him into this mess, after all) help figure out a way to make everyone happy. Sam uses his flair for making things up as he goes along and, miraculously, manages to find a solution that everyone approves.

Great fun and a lovely quick read. ★★★★

[Disclaimer: My review policy is posted on my blog, but just to reiterate....The book was offered to me for impartial review  and I have received no payment of any kind. All comments are entirely my own honest opinion.]

Book Lovers' London: Mini-Review

Although the edition I found at my local library's used bookstore is out of date, it was interesting to read through and see the variety of bookshops available in London in 1999. But it also makes me sad to know how many of these shops are no longer in business. I only hope that when I finally manage to make a trip to England the rest will still be going strong. I'll have to get the most up-to-date guidebook then.

The Films of Sherlock Holmes: Mini-Review

The Films of Sherlock Holmes (1978) by Chris Steinbrunner and Norman Michaels is an interesting look at the Great Detective in film from the earliest days of silent movies--with the detective's first onscreen adventure lasting only a few minutes--through Nicholas Meyers' The Seven Percent Solution. There are lots of black and white pictures--a surprising amount from the early years considering how few of those films have survived--and the synopses of the movies are detailed. Some might say too much so because the endings are revealed. Fortunately, I have seen nearly all of the Holmes films that are available so not many were spoiled for me. It was great fun to read through this and remind myself of all the Holmes films I have watched over the years...and if I weren't trying to beat the 2014 time clock to squeeze in enough books to "outdo" my number read in 2013 I would be tempted to watch a few of these.  ★★★★
